Mitchell, Reverend Peter G.
Reverend Peter Gabriel Mitchell, 89, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford. Father Mitchell was born on November 18, 1926 in White Plains, New York to Nora and Peter Mitchell. He attended Eastview Avenue Elementary and Junior High Schools in White Plains, NY, Saint Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and Saint Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD. Father Mitchell was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1951, in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford by then The Most Reverend Henry J. O'Brien, D.D. Father Mitchell's first assignment as a priest was at Saint Patrick Church in Mystic and then Saint Mary Church in Derby. Father Mitchell served at St. John the Evangelist in West Hartford (1957-1961), St. Aedan Church in New Haven (1961-1968), where he was the School's Principal and started the very successful Emerald Cadets Drum Corps, and Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Woodbridge (1968-1979). In 1979, Father Mitchell was appointed Pastor at St. Clare Parish in East Haven where he served for six years. He then served as Pastor in Residence at St. Mary Church in Branford and as the Chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Father Mitchell's final assignment was Pastor Emeritus at St. Mary Church in Derby where he served from 1997 until his retirement on December 31, 2001. Father Peter Mitchell will be remembered by all for his kindness, gentleness and generosity to others. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Father John Charles Mitchell and his sister, Mary Rose Mitchell. 

Friends may call at Saint Thomas Seminary, 467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield on Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 from 9:00-10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Chapel at Saint Thomas Seminary at 10:30am. Interment will follow in the family plot at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, White Plains, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Development Office, Catholic Charities, 839-841 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT 06105-2801.
