The Rev. William Kantner, 68, formerly of Mount Laffee, passed away Feb. 16 in Memphis, Tenn.

Born in Pottsville in 1944, he was a son of the late William and Anna Casey Kantner.

Father Kantner was raised in Mount Laffee. He was a 1963 graduate of Nativity BVM High School, attended St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Md., and received his master's degree in theology from Catholic University, Washington, D.C.

Father Kantner was ordained to the priesthood in January 1975 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Memphis. He celebrated his first Mass at his home parish, Mary Queen of Peace Church, Pottsville.

He served as the pastor in the Memphis Diocese for 38 years at the following churches: Holy Cross Church, Paris; St. Mary Church, Camden; St. Francis of Assisi, Cordova; Church of the Incarnation, Collierville; and St. James Catholic Church, Memphis, where he served until the time of his death. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Shirley Kantner.

He is survived by his brother, Joseph Kantner, Palo Alto; an uncle, Joseph Casey and his wife, Kathleen, Minersville; and cousins.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 250 E. Hancock St., Saint Clair, with Monsignor William F. Glosser as the celebrant. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Clare of Assisi Memorial Fund, 250 E. Hancock St., Saint Clair, PA 17970. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. Bruce T. Hart Funeral Home, Saint Clair, is in charge of arrangements.
