  Priest Lied in Sex Case against Another Priest

The pastor of a Roman Catholic Church in Schriever has pleaded guilty to giving false testimony to a grand jury investigating another priest's alleged sexual activities with boys.

Monsignor Albert Bergeron, pastor of St. Bridget's Church, pleaded guilty Tuesday to eight counts of false swearing. State District Judge Paul Wimbish will sentence him July 8.

Bergeron has not been implicated in any sexual impropriety.

Each count of false swearing carries up to one year in prison and a $500 fine.

Bergeron, who was released on his own recognizance, remains on duty at the church, said Louis Aguirre, a spokesman for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. In a statement, the diocese said that Bergeron exercised "poor judgment."

The case stems from an investigation into the activities of the Rev. Robert Melancon, who is scheduled for trial June 10 on an aggravated rape count.
